The journey has started

So I am gonna try this blog thing.

The occasion is that I am going on a lengthy Africa trip with my old travel buddy Sven and maybe I will find time and muse to document my experience. I guess there will be pictures (head’s up, I’m a lousy photographer!) and other exciting types of new media (!!).

Yeah and maybe I’ll also intersperse some great realisations about life in general should they arise 😮
From all the maybes and guesses you see that I got this thing figured out.

Right now the journey starts with a bus ride from Merano (Italy) to Munich.

I wanted to set up Ghost or some other more fancy blogging platform, but ran out of time with packing and sorting out life before leaving. But maybe there will be some great migration some day, let’s see.
And yeah, also an SSL certificate is still missing, that’ll be sorted out asap.

Anyways I’m off for now, internet is a scarce resource on this major European motorway.

 Let's get to part two of the animal series! I am starting to cheat a little bit in terms of the order of things – sue me! Background info So I started writing this post over a month ago and continued for at least ten times. But now I deleted everything. The thing was becoming a boring disgrace. Which is a great pity, since it was my favorite topic up to that point of our trip. The visit of the largest slum on the African continent! And I was just over-doing it. Too many details for the history, filled with doubts if I get everything right. So now the short and dirty version. Firstly, numbers: according to different sources cited in Wikipedia, the slum has between 170.000 and 2.000.000 inhabitants. Mind-boggling, isn't it? Well, more realistically it's probably something between 300.000 and 800.000. But read the Wiki article, I'll leave the judgement to you. Matatu drivers are not on CBD!

Let's take a break from animals for now and have a look at the pulsing heart of Kenya's hustle and bustle: the Central Business District in Nairobi. Our visit there was quite a bit rougher on the edges than we expected. Business district always sounds impersonal and clean – high-rise buildings and people wearing ties. Already on our way in it was clear that these expectations wouldn't exactly be met. We walked through the John Michuki Memorial Park which is bordering the city center. Through this park flows the Nairobi river which apparently consists purely of waste water, but still crocodiles seem to find a living among the trash there. Even if the sewers are clogged... ... the pipes can be put to good alternative use as bridges. Generally, maintaining infrastructure is a problem in city that grew too fast and where there is too little money for public services.
